Natural and artificial light causes an ever-changing array of shadows and reflections. These images are part of our environment. When projected onto a surface, the original shapes distort, change color and become transparent. The ARBORETUM and ASPHALT series explore these perceptual changes.

The ARBORETUM series started with looking at tree shapes on windshields and windows. These prints are large format transparencies of tree shadows printed with a Durst Lambda printer. The finished pieces project another shadow onto the wall. This adds a sculptural element to the 2-dimensional forms.

Like shadows, reflections are ephemeral. In my paintings, I am also interested in transforming phantom images into objects. The ASPHALT series evolved from observing lights on wet streets. I use oil pastel to apply pigment over textured, acrylic paint. It is a way of spraying color over the surface through texture, layering and pattern.
